Recently we created the real web app development guide for you to explore and understand the importance of web applications. But mobile applications are important as well. And this is the other niche of Syndicode’s proficiency. We’ve done tens of mobile applications and have some conclusions about their necessity, areas where they can be used and the need for them. This time we would like to tell you how important mobile apps for logistics companies.
You know what it takes to be ahead of the pack. For logistics companies that means to have all the latest tools to provide fast, quality, safe and not very expensive delivery with many stages to be automated. To do business from everywhere (which means mobility) companies use smartphones, mobile apps, and other devices that help to automate and manage all the processes from stock inventory and shipments to supervision fleet in real-time. By this:
- chain mechanisms are improved
- productivity is increased
- clients are satisfied
You can browse through our portfolio to see the cases we’ve created. And if you already know the benefits that your business can gain by using the mobile app, do you know the special features for it? What modules should be presented in logistics mobile application? Apart from modules for registration and ordering, payment and listing options, your mobile app must have some modules viable for logistics:
1. Daily log
It is a module for collecting information on driver’s daily log with:
- Driver’s personal information;
- Plate number and model of the vehicle;
- Hours of work;
- Passed mileage;
- Detailed cargo description.
The management process is automated and improved with the mobile application. Driver’s location and mileage are passed to the main office automatically. With this data, it’s easy to calculate the approximate time of arrival to the place of destination. The manager can check drivers’ logs to monitor if there is anyone working out of service hours and control the state of the vehicle in accordance with drivers’ reports.
2. Location tracking
This module is used for receiving and transmitting the information on vehicle’s location. Because tracking location through cellular data heavily relies on the network coverage it’s not very reliable. So for this reason tracking should be provided with both: the cellular connection and the satellite signal through GPS.
If there is a shipment that should be loaded and delivered in a limited amount of time, the manager can check the base and assign the driver whose vehicle has not reached its load limit and happens to be near the cargo.
3. Cargo tracking
To supervise the cargo, there should be the other module implemented. The cargo tracking module can give the information on which item in which van. This can be done in two ways: QR-Code or RFDI/NFT technologies.
- The QR-code for each item may be scanned with a cellphone’s camera through an app, or another special scanner;
- Alternatively, radio frequency identification (RFID) or near-field communication (NFT) technologies could be applied. RFID uses radio waves for detecting and identifying the object. It consists of a scanner and a tag with embedded chip and antenna. NFT applies the same principles but differs by the distance that makes scanning possible. NFC tags should be positioned close to the scanner, so it is not possible to scan all objects at once.
With cargo tracking option the company will be able to avoid losing or delivering a wrong package.
4. Driver’s behavior Information
Driver’s behavior information module can show not only the driver’s location but the driving speed, engine start-up and shut-down times. All this info is automatically transmitted to the manager. Any cases of speeding, irrational driving or injury crashes will be reported. The collected data can be used for developing and enforcing a driving policy of the enterprise to avoid unwanted driving behavior and regulate any violations. This kind of control will encourage employees to work more effectively and responsibly, and avoid using company trucks for personal use.
5. Vehicle inspection
The information on the vehicle state is utmost important for your business. What is the state of it after it was in use? Can it be used again in the next few hours? That is the matter of your company’s productivity. Vehicle inspection module in mobile application will keep records of vehicle’s body integrity check, the state of the undercarriage, brake system, and engine compartment. The manager will be able to revise the results of the inspection and schedule necessary repairs. It will allow eliminating the possibility of a sudden break-down or accident that may occur due to some parts giving away. Neat.
These modules are just the top of the iceberg your mobile application for logistics might have. By using the mobile application your business will increase the productivity and your drivers or couriers will be aware of the rules and timetables. And the client’s satisfaction will be moved to the next level.
